Give Thanks Table Setting

Some of my favorite memories as a child revolve around Thanksgiving time. It was the one holiday out of the year that we would travel to Ohio to visit my grandfather's brother and sister and their families. Some years our numbers would swell to upwards of 50 guests. My great aunt would cook the turkey every year, and you could smell it wafting through the air. We would play games and sneak into the sweets ahead of time the night before. I would stay up with my grandfather's sister, and we would make homemade pies and dressing, and in the morning, cinnamon rolls from the left over pie dough as we watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

However, one of the clearest aspects of the holidays that stands out in my mind, is Thanksgiving Day, just before dinner, my Aunt Barbara would come rushing in with the finished pies and dressing, in addition to one extra box. The projects featured in this post are a tribute to her holiday spirit. She couldn't let the day go by without bringing in her ceramic pilgrims and plastic pumpkins and fall leaves to make sure that the folding tables lined with white paper table cloths, were festive and decorated. For us as we would form a circle, join hands and take a moment to share what we were most thankful for, those little last minute touches made the day complete.

It's been several years since then, and time has come and others have taken up where Aunt Barbara left off. Every year, without fail those finishing touches are in place before dinner begins. What I loved about creating these projects was the ease of which they can be created, and the atmosphere that can be evoked with just a few simple touches. (Tip: Reuse the candlesticks for each holiday, simply by replacing the decorative tapes to match the theme!)
